      Carlemanniaceae

Carlemanniaceae is a plant family that includes the genus Carlemannia, which was named after French botanist Jean-Baptiste-Geneviève-Marcellin Bory de Saint-Vincent’s servant, Carl-Emmanuel. According to the story, Carl-Emmanuel was a skilled plant collector who accompanied Bory de Saint-Vincent on his travels. When the French botanist discovered a new species in a remote location and asked his servant for his name, Carl-Emmanuel replied, “Je m’appelle Carl-Emmanuel, monsieur,” which means “My name is Carl-Emmanuel, sir” in French. In honor of his faithful and passionate servant, Bory de Saint-Vincent named the genus Carlemannia after him, and subsequently, the family Carlemanniaceae was named after the genus.

      Short Description

The Carlemanniaceae are a tropical East Asian and Southeast Asian family of subshrub to herbaceous perennial flowering plants with 2 genera. Older systems of plant taxonomy place the two genera, Carlemannia, and Silvianthus within the Caprifoliaceae or the Rubiaceae. The Angiosperm Phylogeny Group classification of 2003 places the group in the Lamiales, as a plant family more closely related to the Oleaceae than to the Caprifoliaceae.
